How does it work?

Contactless payments are set to revolutionise the payment process for transactions of £15 or less. The customer simply taps a contactless-enabled debit or credit card, or NFC enabled mobile phone, on to a compatible device, and payment is complete in less than half a second.

If the value is above £15, the sale becomes a standard Chip and PIN transaction. To reduce the risk of fraudulent use of lost or stolen cards, there are random periodic checks where the cardholder is asked to enter their Chip and PIN number. These are based on the frequency of a cardholder’s transactions, or their accumulated value.
